What is azelastine and how does it work?

Azelastine is a so-called antihistamine. This means that this drug displaces the physiological histamine, which the body releases during allergic reactions, from the receptors. Receptors are certain structures in the body that can interact with substances (lock-and-key principle). Allergic reactions, for example, occur as a result of this interaction. The interaction of histamine with so-called histamine (H) receptors triggers allergic symptoms such as itching, redness or tearing. Azelastine is also able to bind to the H receptors. However, this binding leads to a blockade, which means that the allergic symptoms do not occur or are alleviated.

What is cromoglicic acid and how does it work?

Cromoglicic acid is a so-called mast cell stabiliser. This means that the influence of cromoglicic acid prevents the release of histamine contained in the mast cells. Histamine is an endogenous substance that is released, for example, during allergic reactions and triggers typical symptoms such as itching, redness or secretions. If the histamine has already been released and the allergic reaction has started, the application of cromoglicic acid prevents the supply of histamine from the mast cells.

However, before the allergic symptoms disappear, the already active histamine must first be broken down and removed. This is why the onset of action of medicines containing cromoglicic acid is somewhat delayed compared to medicines containing azelastine. However, due to its excellent tolerability and unlimited duration of use, cromoglicic acid is more suitable for the prevention of allergic reactions and for long-term therapy.

What is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation antihistamine?

The first antihistamines were discovered back in the 1930s (e.g. antazoline). As these substances are distributed in the body in such a way that they also reach the brain, they have the side effect of making you tired.

The newer 2nd generation antihistamines (e.g. azelastine) have this side effect to a much lesser extent. The term 3rd generation is not associated with any relevant therapeutic improvement, which is why this term is used more in marketing than in professional circles.

Does hay fever weaken the immune system?

Hay fever is not a weakening, but an overreaction of the immune system. Substances to which the body does not normally react on contact trigger a cascade of immunological reactions with the aim of eliminating the substance from the body.

I suffer from a histamine intolerance. Can I use the Polli products?

Yes, because a histamine intolerance is usually a hypersensitivity/allergy to certain foods.
