Treatment
What helps with acute pollen allergy?
Suddenly, a sneezing attack hits you, your nose is running, your eyes are itchy, your throat is scratchy - it's pollen season again. A quick solution is needed to relieve the typical hay fever symptoms. Antihistamines are your helpers in a pinch. They are available in pharmacies as nasal spray, eye drops or in the form of tablets.
Pollival® nasal spray and Pollival® eye drops contain the active ingredient azelastine. This blocks the effect of the allergy-triggering messenger substance histamine. Azelastine belongs to the category of H1 antihistamines, which block the histamine receptors and thus stop the allergic reaction. In this way, the development of further inflammatory reactions is prevented. Nasal spray and eye drops thus have an anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effect. The symptoms are relieved within a few minutes and you can soon breathe freely again.
Also possible is the intake of antihistamine tablets. They ensure not only locally, but in the whole body that the histamine effect is blocked. If the symptoms are particularly severe, it is best to consult a doctor. If necessary, he can prescribe cortisone preparations that act against the acute pollen allergy. However, the drugs should not be used over a long period of time, as they can lead to undesirable side effects.
This is what you can do in addition for acute pollen allergy.
To make acute pollen allergy as bearable as possible, there are a few tips you should implement during peak pollen season:
- Try to avoid the allergens as much as possible. For example, if you have a birch pollen allergy do not stay near birch trees. In general, it is advised to stay as little as possible outdoors during the acute pollen phase.
- Close the windows at home, in the car and in the office, so that no pollen comes into the room.
- Air the apartment extensively in the morning or evening. In cities is generally advised to ventilate in the morning, in the countryside rather in the evening. When it rains, allergy sufferers can breathe a sigh of relief and ventilate without hesitation.
- Wipe the floors regularly damp through to remove pollen from the apartment. Carpets and upholstery should also be thoroughly vacuumed.
- Wash your hair in the evening before going to bed to remove the pollen that has settled during the day.
How can I prepare for the pollen season?
Even better, of course, is not to let the hay fever symptoms arise in the first place. The prerequisite for this is that you know which pollen you are allergic to. With the help of a pollen calendar, you can roughly estimate when things will get dicey for you. However, the start of the pollen season can be shifted forward during a mild winter or backward during a long, cold winter.
Cromoglicic acid, the active ingredient in Pollicrom® eye drops and Pollicrom® nasal spray, inhibits the release of histamine. Since the two hay fever remedies intervene in the allergy mechanism at an early stage, even the first annoying symptoms such as rhinitis and burning eyes can be quickly alleviated. The Pollicrom® products are free of preservatives and therefore particularly well tolerated.
To prevent pollen allergy in the long term, specific immunotherapy, also called hyposensitization, is recommended. By administering the allergens at regular intervals, the immune system is slowly accustomed to the allergy trigger. However, allergy therapy lasts up to three years and should be started in the fall or winter, before the pollen season, under medical supervision.
