Hay fever remedies and allergy medications.
Whoever suffers from hay fever or any other allergy does not have to resign himself to the discomfort. Because fortunately, today's medicine offers a wide range of effective anti-allergic drugs in the form of tablets, nasal sprays or eye drops. The options range from antihistamines and cromoglicic acid to cortisone and immunotherapy.
Which nasal sprays help against allergy?
Most allergy sufferers experience respiratory symptoms with hay fever, but also, for example, with animal hair allergies. The nose suddenly begins to run, a sneeze follows the next, the nose becomes red and itches or swells. Logically, one then first reaches for a nasal spray.
There are antiallergic nasal sprays with cromoglicic acid, which should be used even before the onset of hay fever symptoms. For acute treatment of allergic rhinitis nasal sprays containing an antihistamine are suitable. All nasal sprays should be made preservative-free.
.Which eye drops help against allergy?
Many allergy sufferers are plagued by discomfort in the eyes in addition to cold symptoms. Itching, burning, redness and constant tearing can sometimes drive you crazy. But there are anti-allergic eye drops that have a quick effect.
If you know that you will suffer from itchy eyes right away during the first pollen flight in spring, the use of eye drops with the active ingredient cromoglicic acid is a good idea even before the first symptoms appear. If the hay fever has caught you ice-cold or if you are allergic to animal hair, for example, eye drops with an antihistamine alleviate the acute symptoms.
Antihistamines block the effect of the allergy-triggering messenger substance histamine. The symptoms can subside within a short time. The cromoglicic acid in antiallergic eye drops suppresses the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators, and thus the allergic symptoms in the eye.
What tablets help with allergies?
Sometimes, unfortunately, the use of nasal sprays and eye drops is not enough. Then there are tablets for allergy sufferers, called systemic antihistamines. They also block the action of histamine. The disadvantage: some preparations make you tired. Therefore, ask your doctor for advice on which allergy tablets do not make you tired and are best for you. Newer preparations are now quite well tolerated and do not restrict allergy sufferers in traffic or work.
What other allergy therapies are available?
For very severe allergy symptoms, there is the option of using prescription medications with cortisone-like agents . The so-called glucocorticoids suppress the reactions of the immune system and inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory messenger substances. The mucous membranes can decongest, the itching of the nose, eyes and skin disappears and after a short time allergy sufferers are relieved of the annoying symptoms . However, glucocorticoids can have undesirable side effects and should not be used over a long period of time.
Whoever suffers extremely from the symptoms every year at pollen season or has even already developed allergic asthma should talk to the doctor about hyposensitization, also called desensitization or specific immunotherapy (SIT) referred to. The same applies to allergy sufferers who react year-round to animal hair or house dust
Therapy usually lasts for three years. In this process, allergens are administered in a targeted manner, usually by injection, tablets or by drops. The dose is increased thereby with each time, so that the immune system can become accustomed to the Allergen and one day no longer reacts to it.
By the concentrated load of the allergy releaser it can come however isolated to an allergic shock, why the patients during the allergy therapy always under medical supervision stand. Hyposensitization is started several months before the start of the pollen season in autumn or winter, otherwise too many allergens will affect the body at once.
Additional tips against hay fever
Generally, with any form of hay fever treatment, avoid the allergen as much as you can. Close windows when pollen is present, vacuum floors regularly, and wash your hair at night before bed. The less your immune system has to fight allergens, the better hay fever remedies will work against your symptoms.
