Eye drops for hay fever

Whoever has hay fever usually also suffers from itchy, watery eyes. Often, the symptoms even develop into allergic conjunctivitis, which can be very unpleasant and interfere with everyday life. Anti-allergic eye drops can relieve the hay fever symptoms quickly and reliably.

Why do eyes itch with hay fever?

This almost unbearable itching of the eyes occurs when pollen hits the sensitive mucous membranes of the eyes. The itching is a sign to the immune system that a foreign body is approaching here. This irritation sets the defense mechanism in motion: the body produces histamine to fight the enemy. This in turn leads to irritation of the nerve endings, the eyes itch and become redder and redder.

As much as you would like to rub your itchy eyes - don't do it! Because by rubbing them, you're only making things worse. The already stressed eyes are additionally irritated and blood vessels could be damaged. Rather, use eye drops for the allergy, which provide fast relief from itching and redness through their ingredients.

Which eye drops help with hay fever?

To combat hay fever eye symptoms early on, preparations containing cromoglicic acid such as Pollicrom® eye drops are suitable. The mast cell stabilizer reduces the release of histamine, intervening in the allergy mechanism before eyes begin to itch and water from pollen exposure. Eye drops with cromoglicic acid are best used right at the beginning of the pollen season, when the allergen concentration in the air is still very low. You can check the pollen calendar to see when the trees or grasses that you react to with pollen allergy begin to bloom. When choosing eye drops, make sure they don't contain preservatives, as this can further irritate the eye.

If you're already suffering from the uncomfortable symptoms of itchy eyes and swollen eyelids, antihistamines will help. To combat acute hay fever, two agents in particular have proven effective: Azelastine and Levocabastine. Azelastine is contained in Pollival® Eye Drops which provide relief from irritated eyes within minutes. Thanks to being preservative-free they are very well tolerated.

The eye drops should be used even after the symptoms have subsided, as long as pollen exposure continues.

For Pollival® eye drops, the daily dose is one drop per eye in the morning and one in the evening until the symptoms subside. Treatment should not last longer than six weeks; prolonged use must be under medical supervision. If you leave the house and expect a high pollen load, you can also put the drops in the eye as a precaution.

Then anti-allergic nasal sprays help against the allergic rhinitis. Here, too, you have the choice between permanent treatment with Pollicrom® Nasal Spray, which contains the active ingredient cromoglicic acid, or therapy for acute hay fever with Pollival® Nasal Spray containing the active ingredient azelastine.
